MOTORISTS spend an average of two and a half days a year stuck in traffic jams, new figures show.
Around 20% endure tailbacks which take five hours to clear, a survey from Zurich Insurance revealed.
As many as 10% of drivers who took to the roads over Easter spent more than three hours in traffic, the company added.
The survey also found:
:: 80% believe congestion is getting worse, with 30% reckoning there are more streetworks than before
:: 64% of drivers feel frustrated when caught in congestion with 17% getting angry
:: 28% send text messages when stuck in jams and 21% make calls on hands-held mobile phones
:: 6% admit to taking risky evasive moves to escape the tailbacks, with 2% even driving on the wrong side of the road to get away
:: The M25 is regarded as the UK's worst road for delays, followed by the M6, the M1, the M4 and the M5.
Mike Quinton, of Zurich Insurance, said: "Bank holiday traffic jams are a fact of life and with six out of 10 drivers admitting they avoid motorways to escape congestion, even going on quieter routes might not be enough to escape a jam."
