THE Coventry-based manufacturer of the London black cabs hit by a spate of under-bonnet fires has said it is taking more of the vehicles off the road.
About 500 of the TX4 cabs with a "56" registration have already been recalled by London Taxis International (LTI) following 12 incidents.
But LTI said it is recalling the entire early build range of the TX4 - amounting to about 1,000 extra cabs - at a cost of £4m.
LTI has drafted in independent fire investigators, engineering firm Ricardo and the maker of the TX4's engine, Italian company VM Motori, to examine the problem.
It believes it has discovered a solution through adjusting the cabs' emission control equipment, heat management system and under-bonnet insulation.
LTI parent company Manganese Bronze is already in discussions with its insurers and relevant suppliers to pin down the liability for the problem and recover some of its costs.
But it could face an extra bill for driver compensation during the period the vehicles were off the road, the firm added.
